Towards New Nordic Regions
Af redaktør oddbjørn bukve , henrik halkier , peter de souza
"Processes of change are taking place that have put the role
of the regional level in Nordic countries on the agenda"
Across the Nordic countries movements are taking place towards new political and administrative government structures at the regional level. The book presents an analysis of this development, in order to figure out both similarities and differences in the content of the reform and the reform process. At the same time the book also discusses how and to what extent new regions are growing from below.
The overall aim of the book is to outline the broader implications of the Nordic experience for the understanding of the international trend towards the development of the new regions: What are the main elements in the top down reforms of regional governments? What is the content of regionalism processes related to each other? Are the state reforms mainly an answer to bottom up economic and social drives towards new regions? Are they rather motivated by ideas of a new regionalism which are spreading through Europe? Or are they maybe a result of a per- ceived need for more efficient service delivery at the regional level? By discussing these questions, the authors aim to contribute to the international discussion on new regions and regionalism.

"The book is a very useful guide to recent thinking about the rise of the regions in the Nordic countries."
Phil Cooke, Centre for Advanced Studies, Cardiff University, European Planning Studies, Vol. 17, No. 2, February 2009
"The ambition of the volume is to contribute to existing regionalist literature by adding case studies. This ambition is fulfilled. The book offers a well-presented sketch of current regional reforms and it also pinpoints the fact that Nordic regionalization is different from what is happening in other European states. The point of departure with regard to regionalization in the Nordic countries is a strong centralist tradition and, in addition, a strong tradition of local governments providing the lion's part of welfare services and enhancing democratic participation."
Lisa Hörnström, Umeå University, Sweden, Regional & Federal Studies, vol. 19(1)
